WHATis a DEACON?

  1. QUALIFIED, DIGNIFIED, SET-APART: A deacon is one who (i) meets the qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:8-13 (ii) is recognized by his or her congregation as a deacon, (iii) and serves the congregation in various logistical and administrative ways for the purpose of preserving the unity of the church (Acts 6:1-6).

  2. SHOCK-ABSORBERS: Deacons are “shock-absorbers” in that they alleviate potential tension in the congregation by preserving unity through administrative means (Acts 6:1-6). Biblical deacons do not “own” areas of ministry; rather, deacons facilitate congregational ministry under the leadership of the elders.

  3. SERVANTS: Deacons are servants. The Greek terms “diakonos” literally means “servant.” Elders lead ministry, deacons facilitate ministry, and the congregation does ministry. This is the model laid out in the New Testament. Therefore biblical clarity on the role and function of a deacon is key for promoting peace and unity in our congregations.
