WHAT—is a PASTORAL ASSISTANT?
ASPIRATIONAL: A pastoral assistant is one who (i) has a constraining, resolved, and deeply biblical desire to serve as a full-time pastor (1 Tim. 3:1), (ii) has demonstrated and been affirmed in the gifts of preaching and teaching (Rom. 12:7; 2 Tim. 4:2), and (iii) seeks to receive holistic pastoral training in the context of a local church and in the commitment of meaningful church membership (Rom. 12:4-5; Heb. 10:25).
QUALIFIED: Pastoral assistants do not always occupy a biblical office, but in the cases where they don’t, we desire that they meet the biblical qualifications of an elder, that they might soon undertake the work of pastoral ministry (2 Tim. 2:2). An elder is a man who meets the qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
HUMBLE, TEACHABLE, SUPPORTIVE: Pastoral assistants receive theological training, practical ministry experience, and ecclesiastical leadership development, while also supporting all aspects of the church’s pastoral, administrative, and counseling ministries. They must therefore exemplify humility (2 Tim. 2:15), teachability (2 Tim. 2:2), and a willingness to serve in any capacity (1 Pet. 4:10).
